The Northern Illinois University women’s tennis team placed a program-best four Huskies on the 2021 Academic All Mid-American Conference Team the league announced on Friday.
“We’re very proud of these academic accomplishments and the progress our program has made in the classroom,” NIU head coach Eric Burns said. “Everyone put a lot of effort into their classes this year, especially given the challenges with doing classes online. We couldn’t be prouder of their efforts this year.”
The four Huskie honorees better the program’s previous best in 2017 when NIU placed three student-athletes on the Academic All-MAC Team. A total of 41 MAC student-athletes were named to this year’s squad and all four Huskies earned their first Academic All-MAC honors.
Junior Paula Veyhle leads the group with a 3.98 cumulative grade point average while pursuing her degree in leadership & management. Second team All-MAC selection Maria Potsi added one more accolade to list of accomplishments in 2021 as the Huskie’s No. 1 singles player earned a 3.44 GPA in kinesiology.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport.
