The Cal Poly men’s soccer team’s Gold squad outshot its Green counterpart on Sunday afternoon, 17-3, but settled for penalties to prevail during the program’s annual intrasquad matchup inside Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
Senior forward Manny Perez (above), senior defenders Andrew Forth and Josh Graham and junior forward Nick Giacalone each produced a game high three shot attempts for the Gold squad. Just three of Gold’s 17 attempts fell on target, however, with Perez thwarted by freshman goalkeeper Elias Marshall in the 54th and 65th minutes after freshman midfielder Daniel Normann was stopped by Green starting freshman goalkeeper Gabe Penner in the 12th.
With penalties employed at the end of regulation, Gold converted all five opportunities with Graham, Perez, freshman defender Jacob Glass, senior midfielder Neil Boyal and Forth converting in order for the 5-4 advantage.
Cal Poly, which opened its preseason training camp on Aug. 10, next visits UCLA for a Saturday, Aug. 21 exhibition. Kickoff from Drake Stadium is 7:30 p.m.
