Sixteen days out from playing its first regular season match in 21 months, the Cal Poly women’s soccer program opens its 2021 training camp on Tuesday morning.
Cal Poly, featuring nine returning starters and 22 returning letterwinners from its 2019 squad, enjoys five days of preparation ahead of a Saturday, Aug. 7 exhibition at NAIA Westmont. Kickoff from Thorrington Field in Montecito, Calif., is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
The Mustangs will also welcome Fresno State for a Wednesday, Aug. 11 exhibition at 6 p.m. inside Alex G. Spanos Stadium before hosting the program’s annual Green vs. White intrasquad matchup on Saturday, Aug. 14 (7 p.m.).
The regular season gets underway on Thursday, Aug. 19 as Cal Poly hosts 2019 NCAA Tournament champion Stanford at 7 p.m.
Offensively, Cal Poly welcomes back four of its top five scorers from the 2019 season and 76 percent of its goal production from two years ago. Sophomore midfielder Camille Lafaix (above) led the 2019 Mustangs with four goals during her first season on campus while junior forward Brooke Rubenstein and sophomore forward Nikki Trucco both contributed three. Lafaix also paced Cal Poly two years and ranked seventh among Big West Conference players with four assists.
Junior forward Brooke Oleson, junior midfielders Megan Hansen and Monserrat Hernandez Marquez, sophomore forward Olivia Ortiz and sophomore defender Kyle Rojas each scored for Cal Poly two seasons ago.
In goal, Cal Poly looks to replace four-year starter Sophia Brown (2016-19), who completed her career ranked second in program history with 364 saves – including 88 two years ago. With two appearances in 2019, junior Ava Dorvillier is Cal Poly’s only tenured goalkeeper.
