Hockey community gathers to honor Mark Pavelich, raise awareness about mental health in sports

The coaching staffs at Minnesota Duluth, St. Cloud State, Bemidji State and Duluth Denfeld were among the numerous in attendance, something that meant a lot to Jean Pavelich, the sister of Mark Pavelich.

“It’s humbling,” she said. “Mark, I hope, is smiling. I think he is. This has been really good for the family.”

Proceeds from the event went toward the two hockey programs Pavelich grew up playing with — Eveleth Area Youth Hockey and UMD — as well as The Ranch — Teammates for Life, a nonprofit organization that Pavelich co-founded with former New York Rangers teammate Barry Beck. The organization works with hockey players and veterans who suffer from mental health issues.

Monday’s post-golf celebration featured a mental health discussion that included speeches by former St. Scholastica men’s hockey coach Mark Wick, former Bulldogs men’s hockey coach Mike Sertich and Jack Pavelich, the cousin of Mark Pavelich and president of The Ranch.
