Worker, machinery fall through golf course bridge into Delaware River

A worker operating heavy machinery across a Pocono Mountains golf course bridge was injured Friday when the span gave way beneath the load, Pennsylvania State Police report.

The worker and the machinery fell from the bridge into the Delaware River, both becoming completely submerged during the incident at Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort in Smithfield Township, Monroe County, according to police.

A medical helicopter flew the worker for treatment at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest in Salisbury Township, state police said in a news release.

It occurred about 9:35 a.m. at the resort, 100 Shawnee Inn Drive. The worker was a lineman on a contracted job, state police at Stroudsburg said in the release.

The span connects the golf course to a river island with additional holes, police said. The bridge “fell through” when the worker and machinery reached the center of the span, according to the release.

Witnesses who were present and nearby assisted in retrieving the victim from the water,” police said in the release.

Police did not identify the worker.

Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort said it remained open Friday but that the portion of the golf course accessed by the bridge was closed for the rest of the day, with the belief it will be back in service this weekend.

Bushkill EMS, Suburban EMS and the Shawnee Fire Co. also responded.

Authorities were continuing to investigate the incident, with notifications to both the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
