Wanted Golf, a nonprofit junior golf program in Mid-Missouri, is looking for teams and sponsors for its annual youth golf fundraiser tournament Sunday at Oak Hills Golf Center.
Registration for the four-person scramble tournament starts at 9 a.m. Sunday, and the tournament starts at 10 a.m. It costs $400 per team to join the tournament, which includes lunch, drinks and cash prizes.
The tournament will be similar to last year’s, which had 30 teams compete. The money from last year’s tournament is being used for equipment, access to local gyms and trainers, membership fees and clothing for Wanted Golf members.
The goal is to raise enough money to start creating yearly scholarships for the junior and senior athletes, Wanted Golf Director Levi Elder said. He said he hopes to raise $5,000 at Sunday’s tournament and have at least 30 teams compete again. As of Tuesday, about 18 teams had signed up.
Wanted Golf’s mission is “to teach athletes of all ages the fundamentals of competitive golf, provide accessibility to children of all backgrounds, and instill quality characteristics to promote a positive and successful future,” according to its website.
Elder said the goal is to grow the game of golf by incorporating teamwork into the sport and giving children access to golf.
“We’re trying to just give them a head start so hopefully some of them can go play college golf one day if they want or do whatever they want to do,” Elder said.
