He has a lot of talent and long future: Brad Hogg picks Cheteshwar Pujara’s replacement in Indian Test team

Cheteshwar Pujara has courted plenty of criticism over the last few months, with his performances dwindling be it at home or on overseas tours. From once being considered as India’s go-to man in the longest format, talks of Pujara facing the axe are now in full swing. As for former Australia cricketer, Brad Hogg, Prithvi Shaw is the ideal candidate to replace Pujara.

India skipper Virat Kohli had hinted at making changes in the Test team after the ICC World Test Championship final loss to New Zealand. While Kohli didn’t take any precise name, assumptions in the cricketing spectrum are that of Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane being the ones in the spotlight at the moment.

Former cricketers, fans and pundits have since been opining on the possible changes in the Indian Test team. As for Brad Hogg, Shaw, who has only played as an opener in the Indian Test team, is the ideal candidate to replace Pujara at the No.3 position.

“If anyone was going to replace Pujara it would be Prithvi Shaw. Feel he is more suited there than opening. Has a lot of talent and a long future. He is not in the tour group but a wild card choice,” Hogg tweeted in response to a fan’s question.

In the last five Tests, Pujara has registered scores of 8, 15, 17, 0, 21, 7, 73 and 15. In fact, it’s been more than two years since the ‘Test specialist’ batsman scored a century in the format. Pujara last touched the triple-digit score against Australia in January 2019.

As for Shaw, the adventurous batsman was axed from the Indian Test team after the Border-Gavaskar Trophy Down Under. Shaw had produced a string of unimpressive performances and the Adelaide Test against Australia was the last match that featured him in the Indian Test team.

Shaw wasn’t picked for the home Test series against England as well as the tour of the United Kingdom. The opening batsman, however, will be in action in Sri Lanka with the ‘limited-overs specialists’ as the Men in Blue take on the Lankans in 3 T20Is and as many ODIs.

Depending on the form and other selection criteria, it might not take long for Shaw to find his way back into the Indian Test team. With skipper Kohli also asserting the need to have players with the ‘right mindset’, Shaw is likely to be given opportunities sooner rather than later.
