Virginia Tech basketball: Hokies to play Maryland in ACC/Big Ten Challenge

The Virginia Tech Hokies will play the Maryland Terrapins in the 2021-22 ACC/Big Ten Challenge, the ACC announced this week.

The game will be played on Dec. 1 in College Park, Maryland.

The Terrapins are annually one of the Big Ten’s top teams and are expected to field another top-20 team next season. In fact, in ESPN’s latest way-too-early top 25, Maryland is ranked No. 14, and Virginia Tech is right behind the Terrapins at No. 15.

The Hokies were dealt a big blow earlier this week when guard Tyrece Radford entered the NCAA transfer portal. Radford has yet to announce a new destination and could still return to Blacksburg, although that appears unlikely. Someone entering the portal this late in the offseason is strange enough.

Tech should still have a good team next season, but the loss of Radford does hurt. The Hokies will count on sophomore Darius Maddox to step up and play more minutes.

The Hokies and Terps last played in 2014 before Maryland left the ACC.
